How to use:

  1. Using a clean facecloth, wipe your face with warm water to open up the pores.
  2. Using a dry hand scoop a small amount of balm out of the tin.
  3. Rub the balm between fingertips and then massage it into the face and neck area, using a gentle circular motion to dislodge dirt and grime.
  4. Place the warm facial cloth over the face and let it sit for a moment pressing gently onto the skin. This allows the skin to absorb the beautiful essential oils within the balm and you can also inhale the oils.
  5. Using gentle pressure, wipe off and splash your face with cold water to close the pores.
  6. Remember to replace the lid on your product to keep it free from moisture and dust. Store in a cool place.

It is recommended that you avoid contact with the eyes, if irritation occurs discontinue use. Do not use on broken or irritated skin.

Lets look at the nourishing oils in our cleansing balm.

Castor Oil

Castor oil is a vegetable oil that is derived from the seeds of the castor bean plant, scientifically known as Ricinus communis. It is a pale yellow or colourless liquid with a distinct odour and taste. Castor oil has been used for a wide range of purposes for centuries. Almost 90 percent of its fatty acid content is a rare, dense, and concentrated compound called ricinoleic acid.

Many studies have shown that ricinoleic acid can hydrate and moisturise the skin and prevent wrinkles, prevent the growth of viruses, bacteria, and yeast molds, reduce skin inflammation, help with ringworm, keratosis, abrasions, and fungal infections, heal acne, and other skin infections. Castor oil is a very thick oil, and a topical application can penetrate the skin far deeper than any other oil and it helps with the breakdown of lumps and bumps under the skin.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is a nutrient-packed oil made from pressing olives and then expressing their oil. It is rich in healthy monounsaturated fats and antioxidants, which may benefit the skin when applied directly to it. Olive oil is packed with healthy vitamins, fats, and antioxidants, and has been linked to improved skin moisturization, anti-aging effects, and relief from sun damage. Because olive oil helps to lock in moisture, it can be used on the skin for extra moisturization and treatment of dry skin.

Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E oil is a collective description for eight compounds, four tocopherols and four tocotrienols.  The positive effects of vitamin E include its ability to support the proper functions of many organs, enzymatic activities, and neurological processes in the body.
Vitamin E benefits the skin by strengthening the capillary walls and improving moisture and elasticity, acting as a natural anti-aging nutrient. Studies have shown that vitamin E reduces inflammation both within your body and on your skin,
Vitamin E is absorbed by the epidermis layer of the skin and can be used to treat sunburn, which is one of the leading causes of skin cancer, among other factors. Because it speeds up cell regeneration, it can be used to treat scars, acne, and wrinkles. This makes your skin look healthier and younger.

Essential Oil Properties

Tea Tree

Tea tree oil, also known as melaleuca, is well-known for its powerful antiseptic properties and ability to treat wounds, which is why it’s one of the top antibacterial essential oils. Tea tree is a volatile essential oil derived mainly from the Australian native plant Melaleuca alternifolia. It’s been widely used throughout Australia for at least the past 100 years, and for over seven decades, it’s been documented in numerous medical studies for its ability to kill many strains of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Due to tea tree oil’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, it has the potential to work as a natural remedy for acne and other inflammatory skin conditions, including eczema and psoriasis.

Lavender - lavender essential oil is the most used essential oil in the world today, but the benefits of lavender were actually discovered over 2,500 years ago. Because of its powerful antioxidant, antimicrobial, sedative, calming and anti-depressive properties, lavender oil perks abound, and it’s been used both cosmetically and therapeutically for centuries. Lavender is a natural antioxidant that works to prevent and reverse disease. A 2013 study published in Phytomedicine found that it increased the activity of the body’s most powerful antioxidants including glutathione.

Mandarin

With quite a history dating back thousands of years to traditional Chinese medicine, mandarin is known to be the sweetest and the most calming of all citrus essential oils. Why? Mandarin essential oil is very mild and known for its many healing properties. For instance, mandarin essential oil is useful in helping to reduce acne, brighten the skin, alleviate insomnia, reduce oily skin, diminish the appearance of scars and age spots and minimize stress and wrinkles. And that’s not all. Because it’s gentle, mandarin typically does not irritate your skin. It has the ability to help prevent infection of irritated skin by preventing bacteria and fungal development.

Tumeric

Turmeric oil is derived from turmeric, which is well-known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-microbial, anti-malarial, anti-tumor, anti-proliferative, anti-protozoal and anti-aging properties. Turmeric benefits come from its health-promoting vitamins, phenols and other alkaloids. Turmeric oil is considered to be a strong relaxant and balancer to the body.

So what are the benefits of turmeric on skin? Many people use turmeric oil for skin lightening, which is a great idea because using turmeric topically has been shown to decrease the appearance of facial hyperpigmentation as well as fine lines and wrinkles. With its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, it can also be helpful as a natural acne treatment.

According to Sanskrit medical treatises and Ayurvedic and Unani systems, turmeric has a long history of medicinal use in South Asia. Topically speaking, turmeric essential oil is traditionally used as an antiseptic and in natural skin care to discourage acne and facial hair in women.

Note – I often get asked about essential oils that are safe to use in pregnancy. Whilst I am a qualified Naturopathic Practitioner and understand the qualities and benefits of the essential oils I use in our formulations, I believe you should consult the expertise of a qualified aromatherapist to discuss safe oils for use during pregnancy. You should also discuss this with whatever healthcare professionals are supporting you during your pregnancy.

The International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists is the largest aromatherapy specific professional practitioner organisation in the UK, involved in supporting aromatherapists and improving standards of education and practice in aromatherapy and can advise you on qualified and accredited practitioners in your area.
