Lets look at the nourishing ingredients in our bars;

Mango Butter

Mango butter is what its name precisely suggests - it is a fat derived from mango seeds and it has excellent moisturizing properties.

Mango butter was used years ago to encourage wound healing and is packed with antioxidants and works as an emollient to soften the skin. This makes it a great ingredient for dry skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis as it effectively helps relieve itchiness and flakiness. It also offers skin protection due to its emollient properties.

Mango butter is non-comedogenic and can be used by any skin types. Non-comedogenic means that it will not block your pores so of you have acne-prone skin, you can use this butter as well to keep your skin hydrated.

Shea Butter

Shea butter is known as "Mother Nature's Conditioner" for its exceptional softening and moisturizing properties.

Like Mango Butter, Shea butter is another tree nut butter derived from shea nuts of the shea tree. It has been used traditionally over the years  for medicinal and cooking purposes in Africa. Shea is packed with essential fatty acids and vitamins, making it perfect for collagen production and UV protection. Its buttery texture contains 60% fat, which makes it ideal for penetrating the skin. Plus, the natural moisturizers in shea butter are analogous to the sebaceous glands of our skin extract. All this together makes shea a moisturizing miracle for your skin.

Cocoa Butter

Cocoa butter is a white-coloured, creamy fat derived from cocoa beans. Cocoa butter has rich moisturizing properties and is used as a core ingredient in many skin moisturizers. It can be beneficial for skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Cocoa butter is a powerhouse of antioxidants! It helps your skin fight free-radical damages  which happen due to sun exposure, smoking, air pollutants and harsh chemicals. Free radicals lead to premature skin ageing, dark and rough patches. Cocoa butter can offer you a soothing relief as it has anti-inflammatory properties. Filled with fatty acids like palmitic, stearic, and oleic acids, it helps the protective layer of your skin to retain moisture. Naturally, moisture retention prevents your skin from drying out.

Neem Oil

Neem is an amazing remedy for various skin problems and hair issues. In  Ayurvedic medicine ointments for the skin include neem for its antiseptic and medicinal properties. Its antibacterial and healing properties helps prevent skin infections caused by eczema. It has antihistamines, which help relieve allergy-like symptoms such as itching and swelling, which is common in eczema. Neem oil is rich in Vitamin E and fatty acids that not only hydrates your dry skin associated with eczema, but also helps repair your damaged skin barrier. It is anti-inflammatory (reduces redness and swelling) as well as analgesic (reduces pain caused by itching bruises).

Sweet Almond Oil

The nutrient-rich oil from sweet almonds is amazing on dry, damaged skin and can help restore and rejuvenate it. This oil is considered to have medicinal properties and has been used in traditional medicine from ancient times. It is rich in vitamins E and A, fatty acids, and zinc, which not only hydrate your skin, but also help in wound healing and maintaining a healthy skin barrier function. Sweet almond oil also helps to fight inflammation, oxidative stress, photodamage, reduce lines, wrinkles and lighten scars.

Essential Oil Properties

May Chang – Whilst a relatively  new oil in the world of  modern Aromatherapy May Chang has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for centuries. All parts of the plant are used in TCM based natural remedies for muscular aches and pains, headaches, and digestive problems. May Chang has amazing euphoric properties which have been shown in trials to calm anxiety. It is also helpful as an immune tonic, and  it can settle digestive upsets. We chose it for our Body Lotion Bar because it can ease muscular aches and pains by helping to improve circulation.

Lemon - uplifting and gently energising for the mind and purifying for the body as an effective immune booster, leaving you feeling cleansed and content. Lemons and lemon essential oil have been used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat a wide spectrum of health conditions for at least 1,000 years. Lemon oil is one of the most popular citrus essential oils because of its versatility and powerful antioxidant properties. The health benefits of lemon essential oil have been well-established scientifically. Lemon is best known for its ability to cleanse toxins from the body, and it’s widely used to stimulate lymphatic drainage, rejuvenate energy, purify skin, and fight bacteria and fungi. Also known as a mood booster and can help ease nausea.

Lavender - lavender essential oil is the most used essential oil in the world today, but the benefits of lavender were actually discovered over 2,500 years ago. Because of its powerful antioxidant, antimicrobial, sedative, calming and anti- depressive properties, lavender oil perks abound, and it’s been used both cosmetically and therapeutically for centuries. Lavender is a natural antioxidant that works to prevent and reverse disease. A 2013 study published in Phytomedicine found that it increased the activity of the body’s most powerful antioxidants including glutathione.

Ylang Ylang - Ylang ylang means “flower of flowers” and was given this name because of its sweet, floral scent. Fans of Chanel No. 5 will probably recognise the aroma from ylang ylang’s smell as one in the world famous perfume. Ylang Ylang essential oil is considered an effective antidepressant, antiseptic, antispasmodic and sedative hence why we have paired it with Lavender oil in our Lotion Bar. It has also been highly sought after for centuries for its skin-healing properties. Research shows that this oil has positive effects on immune health, blood flow and emotions, making it a natural remedy for the endocrine, cardiovascular, reproductive and digestive systems.

Sweet Orange - derived from the outer peel of the common orange fruit this beautiful oil has been widely used for centuries because of its immune-boosting effects. Limonene, which is a monocyclic monoterpene that’s present in orange peel oil, is a powerful defender against oxidative stress that can negatively affect our immune systems. Orange oil is a natural remedy for high blood pressure and is capable of improving blood flow and fighting hypertension, some of the biggest risk factors for heart disease. A study published 2014 compared the effects of human subjects inhaling fresh air compared to orange essential oil. They found that the people who inhaled the orange oil experienced significant reductions in their both their systolic and diastolic blood pressure. In addition, a “feeling of comfort” was significantly greater during inhalation of the orange essential oil than during inhalation of fresh air. The effects of this beautiful oil on blood pressure means it  might also be useful for improving low libido, reducing pain from headaches, and lowering PMS-related symptoms. The strong anti-inflammatory effects of orange oil have been researched in regard to its effects for fighting pain, infection and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.  Like most citrus oils is can help calm anxiety and improve mood due to its uplifting and tranquilizing properties.

Ginger – Ginger essential oil is a warming essential oil that works as an antiseptic, laxative, tonic and stimulant. The health benefits of ginger essential oil are nearly identical to the medicinal health benefits of fresh ginger. In fact, the most potent form of ginger is the essential oil because it contains the highest levels of gingerol. Ginger essential oil is used at home to treat nausea, upset stomach, menstrual disorders, inflammation and respiratory conditions. When used as aromatherapy, it’s also known to bring on feelings of courageousness and self-assurance, which is why it’s known as “the oil of empowerment.”

Note – I often get asked about essential oils that are safe to use in pregnancy. Whilst I am a qualified Naturopathic Practitioner and understand the qualities and benefits of the essential oils I use in our formulations, I believe you should consult the expertise of a qualified aromatherapist to discuss safe oils for use during pregnancy. You should also discuss this with whatever healthcare professionals are supporting you during your pregnancy.

The International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists is the largest aromatherapy specific professional practitioner organisation in the UK, involved in supporting aromatherapists and improving standards of education and practice in aromatherapy and can advise you on qualified and accredited practitioners in your area.
